My parents were married on December 19th, so we always put the Christmas tree up on their anniversary. So my brothers and I spent hours drawing and gluing and cutting out paper decorations. We also strung popcorn and cranberries that year. The only thing that wasn’t homemade was the lights and the icycles. It was a wonderful tree, and my mom still has those old paper decorations. Both of my brothers are gone from us now, so each year I put two of the paper decorations on the tree in honor of them. On Christmas Eve, we got to open one gift, and it was always pajamas. When bedtime came, we would put on our new pj’s and put a glass of milk and some homemade cookies on a little tray and put it in the living room for Santa. During the night “Santa” left gifts wrapped up in colorful paper and ribbons, and he always ate the cookies and drank the milk. We were always told to get to bed on time, because Santa couldn’t come if we were still awake.

I adore the world of Christmas traditions, which vary from Humble Bumble Ugly Christmas Abominable Snowman Christmas Shirt to country … I also enjoy the ancient pre-Christian traditions behind most Christmas customs. That’s not persecution, and it’s only traditionalism if it’s your tradition. Christmas presents have nothing to do with Christianity. Neither do almost all of the Christmas customs of hanging holly and mistletoe, decorating trees, drinking egg nog, Santa Claus, jingling sleigh bells. etc. In the religiously strict Massachusetts Bay Colony celebrating Christmas was illegal, as their leaders recognized that almost all of the festivities were continuations of pagan practices. Merchandisers have gotten rich by popularizing the giving of gifts at Christmas and they spend heavily every year to promote this secular mania. So feel free to give Christmas presents to any of your friends and relations regardless of race, religion age or sexual orientation.
